InvestmentNews has opened the nomination window for its third annual 5-Star Financial Planners recognition program, which honors U.S.-based planners who demonstrate measurable client impact, professional integrity, and innovative practice management. The program, now in its third year, aims to spotlight advisors whose work extends beyond portfolio construction to encompass holistic financial decision-making, security, and long-term goal achievement.

Nominations are open to colleagues, peers, and industry professionals, and self-nominations are also accepted. The submission period runs through Friday, November 27, with honorees to be announced on the InvestmentNews website in April 2027. The program is designed to recognize planners across all channels, including RIAs, broker-dealers, wirehouses, and independent practices.

According to the program guidelines, submissions should highlight achievements from the past 12 months, with particular emphasis on improved client financial outcomes, growth in assets under management (AUM), client retention and satisfaction metrics, the introduction of new services or planning solutions, and demonstrated industry leadership or community involvement. These criteria are intended to capture both quantitative and qualitative contributions to the profession.

The recognition comes at a time when the advisory industry is grappling with shifting regulatory landscapes and evolving client expectations. For instance, the SEC's recent decision to raise the small-adviser threshold to $1 billion, covering two-thirds of RIAs, has reshaped compliance burdens and may influence how planners allocate resources toward client services. As the new threshold takes effect, planners may find more room to focus on holistic planning rather than regulatory overhead.

In parallel, technology and alternative investments are increasingly part of the planner's toolkit. Firms like Savvy Wealth have launched private markets programs with Allocate for qualified-purchaser clients, reflecting a broader trend toward alternative assets in client portfolios. Meanwhile, the expansion of advisor AI networks, as seen with Anthropic's partnerships with Invesco, CAIS, and 55ip at Schwab IMPACT, suggests that planners are adopting new tools to enhance client engagement and efficiency.

The 5-Star Financial Planners program also aligns with broader industry efforts to elevate the planning profession. For example, the CFP Board recently reported that 78% of planners field questions about Social Security solvency, underscoring the importance of comprehensive planning in an era of economic uncertainty. Similarly, initiatives like Amplified Planning's externship, which drew a record 2,825 aspiring planners, highlight the growing pipeline of talent entering the field.

Nominations for the 5-Star program are separate from the 2027 Top Financial Professionals ranking, which has its own nomination deadline of October 30. Advisors and firms may consider submitting for both programs to maximize recognition opportunities. The 5-Star program specifically focuses on individual planners' achievements, while the Top Financial Professionals ranking takes a broader view of firm performance and leadership.

To submit a nomination, visit the InvestmentNews website and complete the online form, providing specific examples of the nominee's impact over the past year. The selection committee will evaluate submissions based on the stated criteria, and honorees will be featured in a dedicated online section in April 2027. This recognition serves as a valuable differentiator for planners seeking to build trust with prospective clients and reinforce their standing within the industry.

As the financial planning profession continues to evolve, programs like 5-Star Financial Planners provide a benchmark for excellence and a platform to celebrate those who are making a tangible difference in clients' financial lives. With the nomination deadline approaching, industry participants are encouraged to identify and honor the planners who exemplify the highest standards of client service and professional achievement.
