KeyBank has tapped Mike Keane, the former chief operating officer of Wilmington Trust, to lead day-to-day operations for its Key Wealth division, a move that signals the Cleveland-based bank's intent to scale its $70 billion wealth management business. Keane will assume the role on Oct. 1, 2026, succeeding Joe Calabrese, who is retiring after more than 30 years in the industry.
Keane, who will report to Joe Skarda, head of Key Wealth, will oversee the integration of financial planning, investment management, fiduciary services, and banking capabilities across the division. His appointment comes as Key Wealth reported a 14% year-over-year increase in assets under management to $70 billion, and a net addition of 53 advisors in 2025, bringing total advisor headcount to 543. The bank has publicly set a goal of reaching $100 billion in AUM by 2030.
Keane brings more than 25 years of experience in strategy, operations, and business transformation, having led growth and modernization efforts at Wilmington Trust, the wealth arm of M&T Bank. His background includes enhancing client and advisor experiences, which KeyBank says will be critical as it competes for talent and scale.
"Mike is a proven financial services leader with deep experience driving growth, modernizing operating models, and building high-performing teams," Skarda said in a statement. "His track record of leading transformation across wealth management and banking makes him exceptionally well suited to help guide the next chapter of our business."
Keane holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance and an MBA from the University at Buffalo, and has completed executive education at Harvard Law School and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He is based in Baltimore.
Calabrese, who joined Key Wealth in 2016, will remain with the organization through the end of 2026 to ensure a smooth transition. Skarda credited him with shaping Key Wealth's growth strategy, operating model, and client experience capabilities over his nearly decade-long tenure.
The leadership change reflects a broader trend among regional banks investing in operational leadership to support aggressive growth targets. Wilmington Trust itself underwent a leadership transition in late 2024, elevating Lisa Roberts to head of wealth management as the firm expanded its high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth client base.
Key Wealth operates across Key Private Bank, Key Family Wealth, Key Private Client, and Key Institutional Advisors, and is part of KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY), which reported approximately $191 billion in total assets as of June 30, 2026. The division's advisor recruitment drive, which added 10% headcount in a single year, has increased pressure on operations teams to onboard advisors efficiently and deliver a competitive client experience.
For financial advisors, Keane's appointment underscores that Key Wealth is treating operational scale as a strategic priority as it works toward the $100 billion milestone. The broader question for bank-affiliated wealth divisions is how to keep the advisor experience competitive against independent platforms, a challenge that Keane's transformation background is intended to address.
